Old Spanish Colonial Painting, Retablo Archangel Harquebusier Esriel

This is a beautiful Spanish colonial painting depicting the Arcangel Arcabucero Esriel (Harquebusier Archangel Esriel). The early 20th c. painting is oil on wood with a brass border nailed around the periphery. Dressed in colonial clothing, the Archangel, a common theme in early colonial Andean art, is depicted holding a heavy harquebus, or 15th c. gun. The style of the painting is La Escuela Cusqueña, a school of artistic mastery that evolved from the churches and monastaries in Peru and Bolivia. The wood has a partial age crack along the back, not affecting the painting, and a small loss where the original gesso shows through (on the cape near the left knee), otherwise the painting is in wonderful condition with a beautiful patina. The soft depiction of this Angel is truly beautiful!

This is an exceptional painting for the collector of Spanish Colonial art.
