Antique Spanish Colonial Madonna, Virgen Dolorosa

This is a beautiful depiction of the Virgen Dolorosa from South America dating to the 19th century. The Madonna has been carved from maguey wood with the addition of stiffened fabric for her dress. The face has been beautifully carved and meticulously painted with careful detail to her eyelashes and tears surrounding her upturned glass eyes. The high content antique colonial silver aureola or crown is a treasure in itself. (The crown may not have been the original one as the fit is a little loose - I recommend securing the crown with a museum putty for stability.) The Virgin Santo is in excellent condition with only a minor break to her dress. She is an exquisite representation of the Virgen Dolorosa!

Measurement with crown: 19" high; without: 17"
